Teachers have asked that the following points are raised to parents, some apply to all children others to certain year groups.

  • Primary 1 children must return their homework books every Thursday to the class teacher.
  • Primary 2 pupils require black plimsolls for P.E.
  • All items of clothing need to be clearly labelled – Initials with year group written with pen on a label is great!
  • Long hair should be tied back.
  • P1-P3 Need a spare change of clothes sent in for slips, trips and drips!
  • P3 Skill School children may wear navy joggers to school on Wednesday.
  • Healthy break is fruit only!

New School Year – Fr. Mc Dermott will celebrate Mass tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. with all staff and pupils in the Master’s Hall.

Safer School App – The school has registered now with The Safer School App, an information letter will be sent out to parents, detailing how to download and register. The Schools Safe Guarding team recommend that all Parents/Carers, School Staff and Governors download this App.

School Crossing Patrol – William Mc Laughlin will be retiring shortly from his role as School Crossing Patrol. When a retirement is looming the department send out an assessor to see if there is a requirement for the school to have a school crossing. We would encourage as many children as possible to walk to school in the coming weeks. Children should preferable walk unaccompanied (Primary 5-7). The number of children using the crossing will determine if a School Crossing is needed on the main Coolafinney Road. If we lose the school crossing, it cannot be reviewed again for two years, please walk as much as possible in the weeks ahead.

Accelerated Reading – All pupils Primary 3-6 have been registered for the Accelerated Reading Programme. Children will borrow books from the school library to read and then they will be quizzed at school once the book has been completed. The school computer suite will be open every morning from 8:45 – 9:00 a.m. to allow quizzes to be taken. Class teachers may also allow access to quizzes throughout the day. Unfortunately, pupils will no longer be able to sit a quiz at home. All Primary 3 pupils and new pupils to the school will be sent out a login information letter. Parents may follow their child’s progress online, if you require help in accessing this please contact the class teacher or school office.

School Show Recording – All USB pens that have been ordered have been distributed. There are a few remaining. Once these are sold the school will not be able to order any more copies. To avoid disappointment please place your order now. Orders and payment will be taken via ParentPay at a cost of £5. When ordering please ensure that you have selected the appropriate cast i.e. the recording or Cast A or the recording for Cast B.

Ladies Netball – Ladies Netball cancelled tonight Thursday 15th but resumes next Thursday at Broadbridge Primary School in the Master’s Hall at 8:00 p.m.  All ladies 18+ are welcome to join. Cost £3.

Calling all Cross Country Runners! – City of Derry Spartans have very kindly offered to help train the staff & pupils for Cross Country this year. They will be seen assisting Miss Simpson, Miss O’Neill and Miss Madden as they prepare our children for the Flavahan’s Cross Country League. All pupils primary 4 –7 are invited to the following. (See attached letter)

Dear All,

City of Derry Spartans are promoting their Saturday morning experience with the aim of –  child centred development and education through cross country running. Club membership is not required and it is free every Saturday morning to all P4- P7 pupils between 9.30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. at U3A in Gransha Hospital Grounds (BT476TG) Follow link https://g.co/kgs/aTDYB7 . Children should arrive for 9:20 a.m. to register the parents & child’s name with an emergency contact number. Parents and child are to remain for the half hour of activities.

The programme aims are below:

  • Prepare kids to represent their school in the Flavahan’s Cross Country League & run in our annual Christmas Cross Country race on the 17th December.
  • Teach & educate children about how to run a cross country race with weekly themes including – how to warm up for a race, how to start, how to finish, how to run through muck, how to run through grass, how to run uphill and downhill, how to enjoy running in the wind and rain (they can be your friends) and teaching parents how to positively support from the side-lines.
  • Explanations on how to do this from weekly 2-minute TED talks with national & international runners and from Spartans expert ‘children’s coaches’ and ‘running coaches.’
  • Race distances starting at 600 metres and working up to 1k or maybe even a mile.
  • No prizes or times and low key with no pressure.

Week 1 theme is – How to warm up & positive parental support from the side-lines.

Parents please:

Arrive at 9:20 a.m. to register.

Stay with us for the half hour.

Watch your child having fun and increase their fitness at the same time!

Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday.
