Maths Week Ireland – Well done to all the children who entered the Maths Week Ireland challenge on Google Classroom ‘Have you got eyes?’  Winners will be announced tomorrow at assembly.  Entries close tonight for all pupils.

Walking to and from School – We are delighted with the number of children that are walking to and from school on a daily basis.  As the mornings and evenings are getting darker, children must wear a high viz vest coming and going from school.  If you do not have one tell your class teacher and we will gladly supply you with one.

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day – Friday 20th October 2023 is (DLD) Awareness Day.  DLD is a diagnosis given to someone who has difficulty talking and/or understanding language.  1 in 14 people have DLD, an invisible, lifelong disability.  People with DLD will often have difficulty understanding words, following instructions, or answering questions.  They may struggle to find the right words to express themselves, say words in the right order, engage in conversation or tell a story.  Broadbridge Primary School is helping raise awareness of DLD so people know about, understand and support this common yet hidden condition #DLDDay.

Please note the time allocated is 10 minutes per child and must be strictly adhered to by all. Primary 1 parent Teacher meetings will be in January.

Attendance and arrival at School – Parents will be contacted at the end of October if their child’s attendance falls below 85%.  We are aware that there are many factors contributing to a child being absent from school, therefore it is very important that the school is informed if a child is absent and the reasoning behind it so that it may be coded correctly for Child Protection purposes.  Children arriving after the 9:00 a.m. bell in the morning must access the school through the main office, as school has already started, this is to ensure minimal disruption to the other children, they must also be recorded as late on the system.

Child Protection and Safeguarding- This is always a priority in our school. Please see the attached flowchart for further information. This reminds parents  who they contact within the school if they have any concerns about their child or any other child’s safety.

Primary 1 literacy Evening – Thanks to all the parents and staff in attendance at the Literacy Evening for Primary 1 parents on Monday past. It really was a worthwhile evening for all.

Dropping Off Pupils in the Morning –   We have been asked by the Parents & Friends to try the following in the morning to ease the traffic congestion outside the school, so far this week it has worked quite well. Pupils from Primary 3 upwards have been reminded in class as to where they can be dropped off in the morning if they are coming by car to school.

  • Only parents of Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils should be parking up in the morning if they wish to walk their child to the class. Parents that are parking up need to pull in close to the kerb on the left-hand side coming towards the school. Children should exit onto the pavement or grass. They should not be exiting the car onto the road. (This should only apply to Primary 1 & Primary 2 parents)
  • Those who can please drop children across the ‘Blue Bridge’ and allow pupils to walk into school. Pupils must use ‘Gate 1’ to enter the school. They must not cross at the car entrance and exit points.
  • The majority of parents dropping their children to school should use the Drop Off Zone within the school or at the layby next to the grass pitch. Children exiting at the layby must use the path and go in to school by Gate 1, they must not cross the road. Cars should move as far forward as possible before children exit the cars. Parents must not exit their cars.
  • Only KS1 & KS2 pupils walking into school from the village should use ‘Gate 3.’
  • Under no circumstances should you double park or park on both sides of the road. This is extremely inconsiderate to other road users and a danger to children.
  • Please keep the speed to a minimum entering and exiting the school.

Thanks to all the pupils and parents who to walk, cycle and scoot to school. Your contribution continues to ease the traffic congestion outside the school.

The feedback from parents to date is that if the guidelines are adhered to then this is working quite well, with the traffic flowing at a steady pace to and from school. The Parents & Friends Association and a sub-group within are in the process of putting together a case plan to have additional parking facilities and road improvements made to both Coolafinney Road and the main route into Eglinton, to ensure that the route to school is safer for all. This is an extremely lengthy process, one that will require some time to get results.

We would like to thank Fr Damian, Fr Brian and Deacon Ruadhri who took time out of their very hectic schedule during Mission Week to visit the school earlier and talk with staff and pupils.

They were also treated to a re-run of Mrs Henry’s Class’ Assembly, which was even better second time round!

This Mission Week has been a time of reflection and has brought great blessings to our school and parish communities.

We thank them most sincerely for their contribution to what has been a most special week.

Eglinton Eyecare – In memory of Jean’s husband, Ed, and to mark what would have been his 50th birthday month, we’re organising a fundraising Walkathon in Eglinton Village. This will be on Sat 23rd Sept @ 12 noon, starting at Eglinton Eyecare.

Anyone who would like to join us on this 3km walk is very welcome and all funds raised will go to the Cancer Fund for Children. This charity gave Jean’s family invaluable emotional support during Ed’s illness and invited them for therapeutic short breaks in Daisy Lodge, Newcastle, enabling them to connect with and gain support from other families living with a cancer diagnosis.

It has continued to be a great support since Ed’s passing, and we’d like to now give something back. If you’d like to help, but can’t join us at our event, donations are also welcome on our JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/…/eglinton-eyecare-opticians…

Hoping to see some familiar faces on the day
