Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2023 –Get set… we’re taking part in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2023 the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs from 20-31st March. It’s free and we would love everyone to be involved. Children can walk, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible during the event.
Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is a great way to build physical activity in children’s daily routine which is important for their physical health and mental wellbeing.
Active school runs also help to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gate. A 2021 YouGov study showed nearly half of UK children worry about air pollution near their school. And that children thought active travel was the best away to bring down these pollution levels. Let’s get fit and participate!

Half day strike action by teachers tomorrow (21st February)
You may have seen coverage of the forthcoming teachers’ strike tomorrow and we want to inform you about the impact this is likely to have at our school.
When a strike takes place, those taking strike action stop work and withdraw their labour. Teachers involved in the action will, therefore, not teach their class(es) or undertake any other duties before 12.00 noon on the strike day. A risk assessment has been conducted which considers the impact that the action will have on the health and safety of pupils, staff and visitors, and whether the school can run a full or amended curriculum, to determine whether it is possible to operate the school safely during the strike. The school will be closed for pupils until 12:00 noon tomorrow (Tuesday 21st February). Clearly this is a difficult situation, which will cause some disruption.
I would ask you, however, to be understanding.
A strike by teachers is very unusual. Taking strike action is not something that any teacher would undertake lightly. Those on strike will have thought long and hard about their decision and will also lose pay for the period that they are on strike.
On that day the school will open for all pupils from 12:00 noon. If you want your child to have a school dinner this day, it must be prebooked using ParentPay before 8:45 a.m. This applies to all pupils including those in receipt of free school meals.

Broadbridge Parents & Friends Association Update- After our recent AGM we just wanted to share some things that may interest our school families. The coming months will see The Parents and Friends group concentrate on building our school community. If you have ideas or just want to lend a helping hand please keep an eye out in the school note for the date of our next meeting. Just come along, you won’t be signed up for life or onto a committee, it is just a chance to say that you are interested or willing to help out when you can.In the next school year we hope to help the school work towards developing the outside play areas. Work is currently ongoing in the background with regards to getting permissions approved and we look forward to being able to help out.
Planned Giving At the AGM there was a heartfelt THANK YOU from the School to all those that contribute. No matter if the contribution is £1 per month or more, it all adds up and each contributor makes a difference. The funds are handed to the school each year to help where it really matters, things like Classroom assistant costs, Library expenses or the Accelerated Reading Licence. It was also decided that we should make clear some information about the scheme:
* The Planned Giving Scheme for the school is a registered Charity and the accounts are reported annually to the Charities Commission by the Parents and Friends Association.
* a £1 donation turns into £1.25 if we have a gift aid form signed by each person giving. As a charity we can claim this additional 25p from the Government to add to our funds. This is a fantastic benefit as every penny counts.
* If you haven’t signed up to the Planned Giving plan and feel like you would like to do so please email the school for a form: info@broadbridgeprimaryschool.com No one in the Parents and Friends group sees who or how much any family contribute, the account is managed by the school Bursar.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Tomorrow, Tuesday 7th February, we will be joining schools and youth organisations across the UK in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2023. Safer Internet Day is a global campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology, which calls on children and young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers and more, to help to create a better internet.
Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote in school and celebrating Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity for us to re-emphasise the online safety messages we deliver throughout the year. Our pupils will be involved in discussions and activities tomorrow and throughout the week.
We would be delighted if you could join us in celebrating the day by continuing the conversation at home. To help you with this, the UK Safer Internet Centre have created some free activities and information for parents and carers which are available at: saferinternet.org.uk/SID-parents.
Whether you have 5 minutes to start a conversation or hours to spare, there are top tips, quizzes and films which you can use at home with your child.
If you have any concerns or questions about keeping your child safe online, please do get in touch with your child’s class teacher, any mamber of our Safeguaring Team or our Designated Child Protection Teacher, Ms Quinn.

Our thanks to Monsignor Dolan and Fr N. Mc Dermott for celebrating the mass, to all the children and staff who made the day possible. Eglinton Eagles Swap Shop
“Eglinton Eagles are starting a Swap Shop initiative within the village – local Primary Schools, Sports Clubs, and Eagles Football Club itself.
Whilst the cost-of-living crisis continues to stretch budgets, the increased cost of sports gear along with peer pressure to wear big brands is constant. This leads to surplus kit that children outgrow quickly (with the kit barely marked); as well as making it more challenging to equip / clothe kids, potentially stopping them from playing sports.
The idea is really simple – remove potential barriers to kids not engaging in sport by providing access to sports gear.
We invite you to donate sports gear (jerseys; shorts; half-zips; coats; trainers; boots) by bringing it into school in plastic bags; the gear will be collected and triaged by Eagles volunteers; and will then be made available to pick up at our Pop-Up shop(s). The plastic bags will be recycled by being used by shoppers to take home the gear from the Pop-Up shop(s). Please only donate good quality gear that you would be happy for your own child to wear.
Everything will be free, and the shop(s) will not be manned so as to create a completely anonymous shopping experience. We will aim to have the shops open at various times to generate as many shopping opportunities as possible. Anything not taken from the shop(s) will be donated to local charities.
Drop-in centres will be available in schools (a box will be left in beside the office and gear collected regularly), via an Eagles’ training session (please see the school bulletin for training session times) and in the Pop-Up shop(s).
Pop-up shop(s) locations and Opening Dates / Times will be confirmed in the next few weeks, however the first stage is the collection process. This will run for the next two / three weeks.
Thank you for your support and if you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help with the initiative please reach out to Paul O’Reilly (paulo_reilly@hotmail.com)”.
